RESEARCH

My project is inspired by employing signs of use in everyday aesthetics. It is the overwhelming norm in the product design industry to design products, which fight signs of use or do not embrace the change in appearance with use over time. I chose to implement this concept by designing a system of park structures that are intended to experience wear-and-tear in a rewarding way. An outdoor public space is exposed to an array of environmental elements and human interactions. The long-term wear-and-tear of these structures is also informed by the forms of the structures and the arrangement of the structures, which can be suited to different park landscapes. In addition to the long-term wear-and-tear, which records interactions with the environment and the users, there are also short term/immediate effects that the park structures reveal with different light, temperature, and weather conditions because of the sensitive pigments.
